Search Console API quotas: retries without request storms
Read the conclusion first
A quota failure needs a record of the endpoint, property, user, project, request rate and error response. Search Analytics load limits and URL Inspection request quotas are different. Repeatedly retrying every failed job can deepen the failure; first reduce the workload that caused it.
Applicable conditions
Applies to multi-user scheduled collection and reporting queues. Current limits must be checked against Google's official page.
Before you open the report
The sanitized HTTP status and error reason, method, request cost pattern and permitted retry budget.
Use one concrete URL or report first. Keep account credentials and private visitor data out of shared notes.
Steps and verification
Identify which limit the job reached
Save the response status and message without access tokens, plus the endpoint and request definition. Count requests by property, authorized user and Cloud project. A successful empty result is different from a quota error, and an authorization error needs a permissions check rather than a slower loop.
Search Analytics has both request-rate quotas and load quotas. Grouping or filtering by page and query together is expensive, as are long date ranges. A small number of heavy requests can hit a load limit even when a request counter seems low.
Reduce duplicate work before adding retries
For a scheduled report, cache completed dates and collect the missing interval once. Request the dimensions the report actually uses. Separate a broad trend query from an expensive page-query investigation instead of downloading every combination on every refresh.
For a short-term Search Analytics load error, Google's current guidance is to wait 15 minutes and retry. If it persists, examine the longer-term load and redesign the requests. Use bounded retries with increasing delays and jitter, and stop with a visible failure state rather than an endless background loop.
Budget URL Inspection for a useful sample
At the time of this review, URL Inspection allows 2,000 requests per day and 600 per minute per site, alongside separate project limits. These are API quotas, not a promise that 2,000 URLs will be crawled or indexed. Check Google's current limits before sizing production work.
Inspect URLs selected by a real question: a changed template, an important missing page or a representative error group. Keep the URL and inspection timestamp, cache the result, and avoid consuming quota repeatedly for unchanged URLs. A browser indexing request is a separate operation with its own limits.
Make partial collection visible
Store successful rows independently from pending and failed requests. A batch with 80 completed checks and 20 quota failures should show those states; it must not display 20 invented zero-click or not-indexed results. Preserve the last successful timestamp when serving cached data.
Close the incident when a bounded run completes within the revised budget and repeated refreshes reuse cached results. Record what changed in the request design and which work remains pending. Increasing project capacity does not remove a per-site or load limit.
Common mistake: Keep switching accounts to bypass insufficient quota
Reduce useless requests and adjust according to platform rules; do not bypass limits.
How to decide when you encounter different situations
Match your actual observation to a row before changing the page. If it does not match, collect the missing evidence first.
| What you see | Next step | How to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Authorization error | Fix authorization instead of blind retries | Record clear error categories |
| Quota error | Cache, queue, and backoff | Limit concurrency and total attempts |
| Multi-account data switching | Verify the cache owner user | Strictly prevent crossing properties |
An authorization failure needs a different remedy from a quota error
Teaching scenario. Names, URLs and numbers illustrate the method; they are not customer or measured site results.
- What you observe
- Example: a job repeats a permission-denied response ten times and displays an empty report.
- What it establishes
- Retrying unchanged permissions does not restore access. An empty fallback masks the failure and can be mistaken for zero traffic.
- What to do next
- Classify the documented error first. Repair access for authorization errors; for retryable limits, apply bounded backoff and cache identical queries. Never rotate through unrelated users to bypass limits.
What counts as a checked result
Record total attempts, last error and next allowed retry. Key caches by authorized user and property to prevent cross-account data exposure.
If a required check fails, keep the error and return to the matching decision branch. A blank record means unverified, not passed.
Leave with a checked result, not another vague instruction
- Your deliverable
- A bounded acquisition plan with partial success and the quota layer explicitly identified.
- Stop and resolve this first
- Stop immediate full-batch retries when the underlying load limit is still unresolved.
Record missing evidence in the worksheet below. An unresolved test is useful information; a blank field is not a pass.

Frequently asked questions
Should HTTP 200 with empty data also be retried?
Check the request and data scope first; an empty result may be valid and should not be blindly retried.
Should I hard-code today’s quota forever?
Use configurable limits and the current official documentation. A capacity assumption must be revisited when scope or provider rules change.

When AISEO Site reports a data-access failure, preserve the error and time for support. Repeating AI analysis does not repair an API quota or permission issue.
