Google Search Console now has dedicated Generative AI performance reports for Search and Discover. The Search report tells you when pages from your site were shown as cited links in generative AI features. It is useful evidence of visibility, but it is not a complete record of clicks, rankings, AI referrals or crawler activity.

The practical rule is simple: use the Generative AI report to answer where your citations appeared, the overall Web Performance report to understand total Google Search outcomes, analytics to confirm visits, and server logs to inspect crawler access. Never combine those four sources into one number.

What the Generative AI report actually measures

Google announced the report in June 2026 and completed its worldwide rollout on 31 August 2026. It provides impression data with breakdowns by page, country, device and date. Search and Discover have separate reports.

An impression in this report means that a link to your site appeared in a generative AI feature and was viewed or potentially viewed under Google's normal impression rules. It does not mean the visitor opened your page, read the answer, bought a product or submitted a form.

Question Use this source What it can establish
Was a page cited in a generative AI feature? Search Console Generative AI report Impressions and supported breakdowns
How did Google Search perform overall? Search Console Web Performance report Total clicks, impressions, CTR and average position
Did a person reach the site? GA4 or another consent-aware analytics tool Recorded sessions and on-site behavior
Did an external AI service send a visitor? Analytics referral/source data Recorded referrals from that service
Did a crawler request a URL? Verified server logs A request from a verified crawler, not a citation

Google states that generative AI activity remains included in the overall Performance report. The dedicated report is therefore a focused view, not an extra pool of traffic to add on top of the Web report.

Build one comparable measurement record

1. Define the surface, page and completed window

Choose Search or Discover first, then one page, country, device scope and date interval. Record the property and collection time. Search Console dates use Pacific Time; an analytics property may use another timezone. Align the comparison or state the difference instead of joining two “last seven days” labels blindly.

Write the question in terms the source can answer: “Did this page receive generative AI impressions in Search during this interval?” If you specifically need AI Overviews alone, check whether the actual report offers that separation. The current documented Search report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode; a combined total cannot be relabelled as AI Overviews alone.

2. Capture the dedicated report's definition

Open the property's Generative AI report for the chosen surface. Save impressions and the available page, country, device and date breakdowns, with filters visible. Note preliminary dates and use a complete window for a settled comparison. Preserve the page URL used by the report, which may reflect canonical attribution.

If the report is absent, mark it unavailable and check the documented visibility threshold and inclusion controls. If the interface displays an unavailable value, keep that state with the export: Google's report documentation warns that unavailable display values can become zeros in downloaded data. A spreadsheet zero therefore needs its original context.

3. Compare totals without double counting

Open the ordinary Web Performance report for the same page and interval. Keep its clicks, impressions, CTR and position labelled as overall Search values. Generative AI activity is included in overall performance, so adding the dedicated total on top would double count an overlapping view.

Also check aggregation before reconciling rows. A property chart and a page-grouped table can count different units. If they differ, retain the definitions; do not average table percentages or force a matching total by creating unknown rows. Missing query detail is not a basis for guessing which prompt earned the citation.

4. Verify visits and outcomes in their own system

In analytics, inspect the same landing page and aligned dates, then the relevant recorded action. Keep external AI referrals separate from ordinary Google organic traffic. Without an isolated source marker, analytics cannot assign every Google visit to AI Overviews.

If citations rose but recorded sessions did not, state both observations. Consider intent, the usefulness of the next step and measurement limitations, but do not declare the AI feature caused the pattern. A form event also needs its own implementation check before it is reported as a qualified inquiry.

5. Use logs only when access is the unresolved question

When a retrieval issue is suspected, inspect the exact URL and response time in server logs. Verify crawler identity using Google's verification guidance. A self-declared user agent can be forged.

Keep access, indexed state, citation impressions, recorded visits and business outcomes as distinct observations. A verified 200 response proves retrieval at that moment; it does not supply missing citation or conversion evidence.

Use a measurement ledger instead of a blended dashboard number

We tested the following ledger with six constructed scenarios to make sure each conclusion stays within the evidence available. The scenarios are synthetic and do not represent customer results.

AI report Overall Web report Analytics Verified logs Defensible conclusion
Impressions present Clicks present Sessions present 200 requests Citation visibility and recorded visits both exist; attribution still needs care
Impressions present No isolated AI click metric Sessions flat 200 requests Visibility exists; click impact is unknown
Report unavailable Web impressions present Sessions present 200 requests Search activity exists; generative AI visibility is not measurable from this report
No report rows Web data flat No sessions 200 requests Crawl access exists; citation and human visit are not established
Impressions fall Web clicks stable Outcomes stable 200 requests AI visibility fell in the measured scope; business impact is not established
Impressions rise Web clicks rise Outcomes rise 200 requests Signals moved together; correlation is not proof of causation

How to interpret common patterns

Many AI impressions, little change in total clicks

This can happen when the generative answer satisfies the searcher, when the citation is visible but not compelling, or when the Web report aggregates activity you cannot isolate. Improve the page for the reader: make the answer clearer, add first-hand evidence, show the decision path and keep the title aligned with the page's actual value. Do not manufacture a “click” metric by dividing unrelated totals.

A cited page has weak business outcomes

Check whether the cited answer and the page's next step serve the same intent. An informational guide should not immediately force a sales form. Give readers a useful next action, such as a diagnostic checklist, comparison or relevant implementation guide, then measure that action separately.

Crawlers visit, but the Generative AI report is empty

Confirm that the page is indexable, canonical, accessible on mobile and internally linked. Then allow time for reporting. Crawler access is a prerequisite for discovery, not evidence of selection. There is no special markup that guarantees an AI citation.

Discover and Search tell different stories

Keep them separate. Discover is a personalized feed and its generative AI report is distinct from Search. A page can perform in one surface without appearing in the other. Use the same page-level ledger, but label the surface explicitly.

What to improve when visibility is weak

Google's guidance for AI search features is the same foundation used for ordinary Search: publish helpful, reliable, people-first content; make important content available in text; support it with images or video when useful; and keep structured data consistent with what readers can see.

For a practical page, that usually means:

  1. answer the main question in the opening section;
  2. state who the advice applies to and where it does not;
  3. include a reproducible check or original evidence;
  4. separate observed facts from interpretation;
  5. update outdated screenshots, product details and dates;
  6. link to the next useful step, not an unrelated conversion page.

Do not create near-duplicate pages for every wording of the same question. Strengthen the page that already owns the intent and connect it to genuinely different supporting guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

Questions teams ask

How can I view generative AI performance reports in Search Console?

Open the site's Search Console property, go to Performance and select the Generative AI report for Search or Discover. Availability and displayed rows depend on the property and report data. Record the latest complete date before comparing it with another system.

Does an AI Overview impression mean someone clicked my site?

No. An impression and a click are different events. Use the report for citation visibility and the overall Web report plus analytics for recorded traffic. Do not infer an isolated AI click count when it is not provided.

Can GA4 identify every visit from an AI Overview?

No. Google Search traffic is generally attributed as organic search, and analytics also depends on consent, tagging and attribution. GA4 can help confirm visits and outcomes, but it is not a complete citation log.

Is crawler traffic the same as AI visibility?

No. A verified crawler request confirms retrieval activity. It does not establish indexing, inclusion in a generated answer, an impression or a visit.

Is there special SEO for AI Overviews?

Google says the normal Search foundations still apply and warns against narrow “AI optimization” tricks. Build a page that gives a clear answer, evidence, context and a useful next step. Then measure each stage with the source designed for it.

Build your baseline today

Choose one important page and record four separate lines: generative AI impressions, overall Web performance, analytics outcomes and verified crawler access. Add the date range and country to every line. That baseline will be more useful than a single impressive-looking number because it tells you what changed and what remains unknown.

If the comparison is incomplete, use the data-limit guide. If overall clicks declined, use the traffic-drop investigation. AISEO Site currently provides Search Console performance analysis and a daily email; this manual measurement method does not mean its subscription integrates the dedicated generative AI report, external citation monitoring or server logs.

What to keep after following this guide

Record source, surface, dates, available dimensions and unknown states. Do not add an overlapping AI-report subset to total Web-search activity.
