Core Web Vitals in GSC: field data vs lab tests
Read the conclusion first
Use field data to judge real-user experience and lab traces to locate a cause. Record device, URL group and failing metric before changing anything. A faster lab run does not mean the field group passed, and missing field samples are not a successful result.
Applicable conditions
Applies to LCP, INP, and CLS issues. Without enough field samples, it should not be recorded as pass or fail.
Before you open the report
The affected URL group and device, field-data window, repeated lab traces and the relevant release revision.
Use one concrete URL or report first. Keep account credentials and private visitor data out of shared notes.
Steps and verification
Read the field group and pick representative pages
In native GSC, record mobile or desktop, affected URL group, metric and report date. Test several representative templates and important user paths; a group is not a separate measurement of every listed URL. The good thresholds are LCP at most 2.5 seconds, INP at most 200 milliseconds and CLS at most 0.1, evaluated at the 75th percentile.
In PageSpeed Insights, distinguish available URL/origin field data from the lab test. If field data is insufficient, keep that state explicit and use measured lab evidence for diagnosis without calling the page a field-data pass.
Find the bottleneck in the relevant metric
For LCP, identify the actual largest content element and inspect discovery, server response, resource loading and rendering delays. For INP, reproduce a real interaction and locate long tasks or expensive event work. For CLS, observe which elements move and whether images, fonts or inserted content lack reserved space.
Keep device, network and test method consistent across comparisons. A teaching LCP example might reveal a delayed hero image; optimize that verified path rather than compressing every image indiscriminately. Do not infer an INP repair from a load-only score.
Verify user functions immediately and field results later
Make a targeted change, preserve its release date and repeat the original trace or interaction. Also test navigation, forms, content and consent controls so a score gain does not conceal broken functionality. Compare several runs rather than selecting the best one.
Field reports have a rolling collection and processing delay. Recheck the corresponding group when enough post-change observations arrive, and label mixed before/after data. AISEO Site can separately save PageSpeed laboratory results; those records do not establish field INP, a passed Core Web Vitals group or causal impact. Deliver the laboratory finding and later field observation separately.
Common mistake: Experiment scores 100 and claim all user experience passes
Field distribution differs from the experiment environment; wait for valid field evidence.
How to decide when you encounter different situations
Match your actual observation to a row before changing the page. If it does not match, collect the missing evidence first.
| What you see | Next step | How to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Experiment improved but field didn't change | Wait for a valid field window | Don't declare the group passed early |
| No field data | Record that samples are unavailable | Experiment diagnosis is still possible |
| Form broken after optimization | Roll back changes that break the business | Accept both functionality and performance |
A laboratory improvement and a field failure can both be true
Teaching scenario. Names, URLs and numbers illustrate the method; they are not customer or measured site results.
- What you observe
- Teaching example: a mobile lab run improves LCP from 4.2s to 2.1s. The field report still shows the previous group as Poor.
- What it establishes
- A controlled run and a rolling real-user group have different scopes and timing. The lab result does not prove the field group passed.
- What to do next
- Repeat the trace under comparable conditions and identify the actual LCP resource. Test navigation, forms and interaction after the fix, then monitor the available field window.
What counts as a checked result
Retain traces, deployment time and functional checks. When field data is unavailable, say so; do not replace it with a lab score labeled “passed”.
If a required check fails, keep the error and return to the matching decision branch. A blank record means unverified, not passed.
Leave with a checked result, not another vague instruction
- Your deliverable
- A metric-specific lab diagnosis, working business paths and a later field-group observation.
- Stop and resolve this first
- Do not trade away a working interaction for a higher loading score.
Record missing evidence in the worksheet below. An unresolved test is useful information; a blank field is not a pass.
Checklist for this page
Fill in your own check results, then decide the next step. Blank means not yet verified, not normal. Content is saved only in the current local session and is not submitted to the server or AI.
Frequently asked questions
Does AISEO Site provide performance scanning?
Not currently; the guide helps you check using native tools.
Does no field data mean the page is fast?
No. It can reflect insufficient eligible samples. Use lab diagnostics while keeping field status unknown.
Official materials and usage boundaries
This page provides operational judgment and checking methods, and does not show customer success cases. Calculation examples and request samples are teaching materials, not actual website metrics. Keep laboratory observations in the workspace, separately from field-data groups. A lab improvement does not by itself pass GSC validation.
