Find traffic changes by country and device in GSC

AISEO Site editorial · Workflow updated

Read the conclusion first

Country and device differences tell you where to investigate, not why performance changed. Fix one page and task, compare sufficiently sized segments, then test the relevant language, device and business conditions. A country label is not evidence of a visitor's nationality or preferred language.

Applicable conditions

Applicable to international sites and mobile traffic declines. Country data reflects reporting dimensions, not a reliable substitute for user nationality or language.

Before you open the report

One page, complete dates, countries with usable sample sizes and native GSC device filters.

Use one concrete URL or report first. Keep account credentials and private visitor data out of shared notes.

Steps and verification

01

Find the segment responsible for the change

In native Search Console, fix Web search and completed dates, select the affected page, then compare countries and devices separately. Preserve each segment's clicks, impressions and position alongside CTR. Investigate meaningful losses before high percentages based on a handful of impressions.

If the global total is stable but a priority market falls, check whether another market's growth masks it. Conversely, a weaker global average can reflect expansion into new markets. Compare the same query task within the affected segment before assigning a cause.

02

Test the actual page in that user's conditions

For a mobile decline, inspect the page at a narrow width and test navigation, tables, form controls and key content. Check whether important information is hidden, blocked or delayed. For a market-specific issue, verify the correct language route, local applicability and any genuine availability restrictions.

Record the URL, device or viewport, language and observed failure. A desktop screenshot does not prove mobile usability, and a country filter does not establish language preference. SEO operations can save exact-page joint query/country/device/date evidence with an optional device filter; use native GSC for other device views.

03

Apply a local repair and verify its boundary

Repair the confirmed affected template or add factual market information where it answers a real task. Recheck desktop and other languages to catch side effects, then observe the same segment after complete data arrives. Keep the original baseline and deployment time.

Do not create one page per country merely because a country dimension exists. Distinct pages need distinct services, facts and reader needs. Close with the affected population, evidence and retest result; an improvement in one segment is not proof of a whole-site ranking effect.

Common mistake: Country is language

Multilingual countries and cross-border users can both invalidate this inference.

How to decide when you encounter different situations

Match your actual observation to a row before changing the page. If it does not match, collect the missing evidence first.

Country and device differences need matched contexts

Teaching scenario. Names, URLs and numbers illustrate the method; they are not customer or measured site results.

What you observe
Teaching example: market A records 1 click / 2 impressions (50%); market B records 100 / 2,000 (5%).
What it establishes
The higher ratio in A is based on two impressions. It is not enough evidence to choose A as the stronger market or move your content budget.
What to do next
Extend the observation window and inspect relevant queries. For a mobile-only decline, open the actual page at mobile width and test reading, navigation and forms; a country is not a language label.

What counts as a checked result

Save sample size and filters beside each comparison. Document a reproducible device failure before attributing the search change to mobile usability.

If a required check fails, keep the error and return to the matching decision branch. A blank record means unverified, not passed.

Leave with a checked result, not another vague instruction

Your deliverable
A localized/device-specific fault record and a test of the affected reader path.
Stop and resolve this first
Do not infer language from country or create a country page without a distinct service and task.

Record missing evidence in the worksheet below. An unresolved test is useful information; a blank field is not a pass.

Checklist for this page

Fill in your own check results, then decide the next step. Blank means not yet verified, not normal. Content is saved only in the current local session and is not submitted to the server or AI.

Frequently asked questions

Can I look at only one country?

Yes, but you must record the filter state and avoid directly comparing with global aggregates.

Can I perform device filtering inside AISEO Site?

Use native GSC for the detailed device checks described here. Do not assume a guide’s workflow is already a product feature.
