Read the Google News performance report correctly
Read the conclusion first
Separate Google News platform traffic from the News tab in Google Search. The Google News performance report covers news.google.com and the News apps; the Search performance report's News search type covers the search tab. Compare each source within its own scope and account for a story's life cycle.
Applicable conditions
Applicable to sites with news content and corresponding report data; it is not intended for ordinary commercial websites to force news writing for reports.
Before you open the report
The exact report name, search type, dates and page rows for each source you want to compare.
Use one concrete URL or report first. Keep account credentials and private visitor data out of shared notes.
Steps and verification
Label the source before exporting numbers
Open native Search Console and record the exact report name. For platform traffic, use Google News performance; for the search tab, use Search results with News selected. Keep Discover and Web separately labeled. An unavailable report does not establish zero exposure.
Save property, completed dates and page/country filters with each export. These are exposure and click counts, not deduplicated people. Do not add sources together and name the result ‘unique readers’. AISEO Site's current Web collection cannot stand in for either news-specific source.
Compare a story at comparable stages
Record the article's original publication, substantive updates and the event it covers. Compare early coverage with early coverage, or equivalent calendar periods, rather than treating a breaking-news peak as a permanent baseline. Inspect page and country differences before changing the whole site.
A teaching example is an event story whose clicks rise during the event and fall afterward. That pattern can be consistent with declining interest; it is not by itself a indexing fault. Check actual accessibility and indexed status if important pages vanish unexpectedly.
Improve editorial clarity rather than disguising old content
Review headline accuracy, visible authorship, dated facts, corrections and the article's next useful action. A genuine update should explain what changed. Do not refresh dates to make unchanged material look newly reported or turn ordinary commercial copy into fabricated news.
Keep the source-specific baseline, actual edit and follow-up dates. Verify the page works before judging later traffic. The completed investigation should explain the source, story stage and confirmed defects; neither report availability nor a successful edit guarantees future News distribution.
Common mistake: Add News and Web numbers directly as user count
These are search performance counts, not deduplicated users; the scope also needs to be clear.
How to decide when you encounter different situations
Match your actual observation to a row before changing the page. If it does not match, collect the missing evidence first.
| What you see | Next step | How to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot see the News report | Confirm whether it applies and has data | Keep missing and zero separate |
| Web has news-related clicks | Check the Web search scope | Do not impersonate Google News data |
| Coverage spikes then falls back | Consider content timeliness | Do not mechanically copy hot topics to create sustained spikes |
News search and Google News are different report scopes
Teaching scenario. Names, URLs and numbers illustrate the method; they are not customer or measured site results.
- What you observe
- Example: a news article gets Web-search clicks, while the team has no Google News report. They label those clicks “Google News traffic”.
- What it establishes
- An article’s subject does not identify its distribution surface. Google News and the News search type require their own report definitions.
- What to do next
- Separate Web, News search type and the Google News report in the measurement note. Compare each within its own complete date window; explain unavailable reports explicitly.
What counts as a checked result
Every chart should name its source and search type. Do not add overlapping or differently defined counts into one unexplained total.
If a required check fails, keep the error and return to the matching decision branch. A blank record means unverified, not passed.
Leave with a checked result, not another vague instruction
- Your deliverable
- A source-labelled story comparison at comparable publication stages.
- Stop and resolve this first
- Do not combine News platform, News search tab, Web and Discover into unique readers.
Record missing evidence in the worksheet below. An unresolved test is useful information; a blank field is not a pass.
Checklist for this page
Fill in your own check results, then decide the next step. Blank means not yet verified, not normal. Content is saved only in the current local session and is not submitted to the server or AI.
Frequently asked questions
Can AISEO Site read News?
It currently uses final Web data and is not integrated with the News search type.
Does a news-related query prove Google News eligibility?
No. A query topic is not a report or eligibility decision. Check the actual surface and official requirements separately.
Official materials and usage boundaries
This page provides operational judgment and checking methods, and does not show customer success cases. Calculation examples and request samples are teaching materials, not actual website metrics. Google's reports, conditions, and interfaces may change; please refer to the current official documentation.
